$40,000 saved because of removing one olive

Robert Crandall was the head of American Airlines in the 1980s. His reputation for living cheaply and cost-cutting was well-established. He once replaced security personnel with a tape of a dog barking; this story has been told many times. Then one day he had an idea, something as simple as taking out one olive from each salad on board.  It would save the airline money, but how much? Passengers wouldn't mind. It turned out to save more than expected—$40,000 that year.  It's surprising how much something so little can save.
