Mid-flight, a passenger from Biman Bangladesh passes away; the plane did not land for nine hours

Two and a half hours into a Monday trip from Sylhet to London, a Biman passenger fell unwell and passed away; yet, the aircraft continued to arrive in the United Kingdom for nine hours without making an emergency landing.  “The purser removed the passenger’s body from his seat and placed it on an empty row of seats after it was presumed that he was deceased,” said pilot-in-command Captain Fazal Mahmud.

The recovered flight log identified the person who died as Shuaibur Rahman Chowdhury, who first became unwell before passing away. According to Aviation Experts, if someone on the flight is unwell, it is necessary to contact with a nearby airport and do an emergency landing there.

As per the sources pointed out by Biman, every airport is equipped to manage medical emergencies. The process involves notifying the nearest hospitals and keeping ambulances ready.

Upon being questioned about why he did not make a landing at the closest airport, the pilot replied, "My goal was to save him, not organize a funeral." Already, his death was presumed. There was no doctor on board to declare him dead, said the pilot, but there was the flight purser who is only trained in giving first aid.

“All we know is that the plane landed with a dead passenger. The Heathrow International Airport authorities handled it as soon as the plane landed and interviewed all concerned. The police and medical professionals came to the airport. We are awaiting a written report,” stated by Irteza Kamal Chowdhury, Biman country head in London.

He added that before the passengers could get off the plane, they had to wait for two and a half hours at Heathrow. To confirm his death, the dead was brought to a local hospital.
